Concsious White People and their fans? What the fuck?
**Sigh**
I've been noticing lately how hard it is to be apathetic, how hard it is to actually not care. For those of you who've known me for a long time, you'll a remember a time when I was wquite the little activist. I was out there holding signs at every protest, I got incredibly indignant about the mis-use of language. But here's where I make a distinction, I was not politically correct, I was anti-oppresive.
What's the difference?
I actually cared about the issues.
However, I got sick of being force fed opinions, I got sick of witnessing some of the most manpultive and vindictive political tactics. I had to stop caring, because it seemed like no one else cared for the right reasons. I had to distance myself before I just became another sheep.
In time I started to become quite bitter at this former 'lifestyle' of mine, and the people in it. They try so hard and tell everyone that they are being 'inclusive' that they are missing the point entirely and end up being incredibly exclusive.
That said, let's move on to what inspired this post:
I invite you all to look at this group here,
Conscious White People and Their Fan ClubThe very idea behind this group is racist. First of all, the idea of people being 'fans' of white people because they are acting like they should is just absurd and demeaning. A more appropriate word would be allies, but even that is stupid. White people do not allies in the fight against racism. They should be allies.
Also the idea of making that much of a spectacle of yourself, can be argued
absurdly that it's a way of giving up your white privlige. Part of being socially concsious is being aware of your privilige, and using it as a tool to fight oppression, as oppose to having it use you as a tool of oppression. Throwing it away is just stupid White Guilt, which gets nothing accomplished.
The creator of this group is putting herself above people by the language she's using. Am I taking things too seriously maybe. I can hear some of you now, 'C'mon David, she's just being light hearted.' Sorry, given the context there is nothing to be light hearted about. If you're fighting for equality, putting yourself above the issue you fighting for just makes you a tool of the opposition.
